Prior to 1600: William Arms/Armes born likely prior to 1600 and probably in the area of Norwich, England. He died in Norwich in 1654, leaving a will. He was a dornix weaver (stocking knitter). Book room county of Norfolk, England; page 30 (1598-1640). Wm. Arms held land in St. Michael costuary. The grand ward beyond the water, city of Norwich. Subsidy roll 153/583, 21. James I, 1623. He had a son named William.

 

Prior to 1600: Thomas Arms who came from Walton in Lancashire, England as a servant

to Griffith Owen and his wife, Sarah. (Passenger ships prior to 1684).

 

ca. 1654: Wm. Arms born; probably in area of Norwich, England. Apparently came to Mass. colony ca. 1676. as he served in King Phillip's war in 1676. Wm. owned and operated a woolen mill in the vicinity of Deerfield, Hatfield, Sunderland, Mass. andis buried in the old burying ground at Deerfield. He was married 21 Nov. 1677 at Hadley or Hatfield, Mass. to Joanna Hawks, daughter of John Hawks & Elizabeth Browne.

 ARMS/ARMES IN VIRGINIA 1646-1700

 

Arms, Henry- early settler in St. Mary's colony (Maryland). Colony formed as a proprietary colony by Lord Baltimore in 1634. In 1646 Henry Arms was shown as a settler. In 1649 the Toleration Act was passed which allowed free worship by all christians.

 

Arms, Henry-13 March 1649; Captain Richard Parrett was granted 450 acres on south side of Rappahannock river for *transporting people, *(brought to the colonies), which included Henry Arms.

note: May be the same Henry from Maryland. Located in Rappahannock county.

 

Arms, Frank; 26 Jan. 1651; Captain Thomas Davis granted 600 acres for transporting people, which included Frank Arms. Northumberland county.

 

Arms, Michael; 25 May 1649, was living in Lancaster county with wife Elizabeth And son, Daniel. 9 July 1663 Michael was granted six rights of land in Rappahannock county. 12 Dec. 1663, Michael was granted 80 arces for transporting two persons; north side of Lancaster county. Michael was in Lancaster county 1649, 1650, 1665, & 1666. He appears to have died ca. 13 Mar. 1666 or 1667 in same county.

 

Arms, Roger, 20 Sept. 1661; Captain Will Drummond granted 4,750 acres for transporting people, which included Roger Arms. Near Nominy river, Westmoreland county.

 

Arms, Susan, 27 Feb. 1665; Captain Thomas Calloway granted 766 acres for transporting people, which included Susan Arms. Near James river, Charles city county.

1700-1750: Arms, Daniel; 8 Dec.1700. Appoximate date of death in Lancaster county. Wife Martha; son, Daniel, daughter Martha, and brother Walter. He was probably born ca. 25 May 1649 in Lancaster county. Likely a son of Michael Arms and Elizabeth.

 

Arms, Walter, 12 Feb. 1717; Approximate date of death in Lancaster county. Wife Mary, son Walter, son Daniel daughter Hannah. Likely born after 1649 in Lancaster county. Probably a son of Michael Arms & Elizabeth. Could have been Mary Elizabeth.

 

Arms, Mary/Elizabeth, 12 Feb. 1717 married Christopher Stevens in Lancaster county. Different records show Mary or Elizabeth. Probably a daughter of Walter Arms & Mary. Likely born ca. 1698 in same county.

 

Arms, Johnathan, 1743; Approximate date of death in Goochland county. probably had a son named John Arms who was shown on a list of tithes in Goochland county in 1648. (he was living in Southam Parish).

 

1750-1800:

Arms, Nancy Opie, 1751-born to Wm. Arms & Janey Taylor, Probably in Lancaster county. In 1769, Nancy married James Norris, probably in Lancaster county. Wm Arms b: ca. 1730 and married ca. 1750. In 183 there was eight persons in household of Wm. Arms in Lancaster county. In 1785 there were seven people in household of Jane Arms, so Wm. apparently died ca. 1784. Another daughter, Molly, of Wm. & Jane Arms (born ca. 1770), married Eppy Norris 21 Nov. 1789 in Lancaster county.

 

Arms, Judith, married Richard Chilton in Lancaster county. She died 1 March 1830 in Campbell county, Va.

 

Arms, Judith, 11 Aug. 1789 married Wm. Luckum in Lancaster county.

 

Arms, Walter; 17, June 1765, approximate date of death in Lancaster county. probably a son of Walter & Mary. William Arms, administrator of will, estate divided to Captain Merrymon Payne, who was a guardian to John, Sarah, Judy, & Lucy Arms. Walter may have had a son william. Walter's son John seems to have been in Lancaster county in 1778, with four people in household. Jihn appears to have died 1789 or 1795 in same county. If he died 15 June 1789, it appears his widow Judith Arms is the one who married Wm. Luckum 11 Aug. 1789 in Lancaster county. It appears Walter's daughter, Sarah married Thomas Myers 13 Mar. 1793 in same county.

 

Arms, Edward, 1782. Living in Amelia county, with eight people in household. He appears to have been born ca. 1750 and died prior to 1817. Children appear to be Lucinda (Lucy), Agnes, Micajah, Josiah, and Daniel M.

1. Lucy b: ca. 1786 probably in Bedford county, & died after 1850 probably in Breckenridge county, Kentucky on 18 Jan. 1817. She married Benjamin B. Mccoy in Botetort county, Va. At her marriage, she was shown as daughter of Edward Arms (dec'd), & Josiah Arms was surety.

2. Agnes b: ca. 1780 probably in Bedford county. She married John C. or Burwell Bryant 24 Jan. 1797 in Charlotte county. Edward Arms was surety.

3.Micajah b: ca. 1770-75, probably in Amelia or Bedford county, & died 1840-46 in Hardin county, Ky. He married (a.) Judith Hill 22 Aug. 1797 in Prince Edward county; (b.) Mary 'Polly' Mcdowall 17 June 1800 in Charlotte county; (c.) Frances Dowell Macy (widow) 16 April 1831 in Breckenridge county, Ky.

4. Daniel M. b: ca. 1787 probably in Amelia or Bedford county, & died 12 Jan. 1867 probably in Breckenridge county, Ky. He served three tours of duty during the war of 1812-1814; all from Botetort county, Va.

5. Josiah b: ca. 1788 probably in Amelia or Bedford county & died after 1866 in Breckenridge county, Ky. He married Sarah Mccoy 20 June 1812 in Bedford county, Va.

note: Daniel M. married Joyce Basham 5 Oct. 1816 in Breckenridge county, Ky.

 

Arms, John, living in Prince Edward county in 1785, with six in household. Some children appear to be William, Elizabeth, Francis, & John. John's first wife appears to have been a daughter of Samuel Goode. He was born ca. 1750 probably in Prince Edward county & died ca. 19 Dec. 1836 in same county. His son John, John was mentioned in will, which was dated 1 Nov. 1831, & recorded 19 Dec. 1836. John's second wife appears to have been Lucretia Childress, daughter of John Childress. They married 12 Oct. 1815 in Prince Edward county. Lucretia was living in same county in 1840 as head of household. Four of their children are shown as:

1. William b: 1780-1790 in Prince edward county, may have died ca. 1830. married Mary W. Forrest 2 Nov. 1809 in same county.children: William A., Waddell C., & Martha Ann. William may have been the William arms in Prince George county in 1810; & in Prince Edward county in 1820-1830.

2. Frances b: ca. 1780-85 in Prince Edward county; married Carter Waddell 23 Dec. 1802 in same county. John Arms, father, was surety.

3. Elizabeth b:1790-95 in Prince Edward county; married James Deshazer 21 Dec. 1812 in same county. These first three children were evidently by John's first wife. Then it appears he had a son, John by his second wife ________. This John had a wife named Mary(Polly). The senior John Arms was very prominent in Prince Edward county where he paid british mercantile tax 1783-1803. He was appointed inspector of tobacco in 1798 at Jamestown.

 

Arms, Akin James; born before 1765. Living in Prince Edward county in 1785, three people in household. He married Molly (Mary) Waddell 21 Nov. 1783 in same county. Possible children: Lucy, James A., & Edward.

1.Lucy b: 1784-90 in Prince Edward county, married Nathan Fowlkes 21 Dec. or 28 Dec. 1809 in same county.

2. James A. b: 1784-95, probably in Prince Edward county. He married Martha (Patsy) Hines 4 May 1813 in same county.

3. Edward b: 16 May 1815 in Prince Edward county. He was likely a son of James Akin but possibly a son of John. Edward married (a.) Jane Hendrick 16 Mar. 1815 in Prince Edward county. (b.) Francis H. Wiliams 29 Mar. 1827 in Prince Edward county. Edward died 26 July 1855 in Panola county, Mississippi.

 

Arms, Elizabeth Linton, 2 July 1785 married William George in Lancaster county, Va.

 

Arms, Theodore, 1793; born in Va. living in Greenup county, Ky. in 1850. Wife Jane; children: Henry, Nathaniel, Abigail, & Andrew I.

 

Arms, Aaron; ca. 1794; date of death in Fairfax county, Va.

 

Arms, Robert, born prior to 1779. He was at least 21 years old by 1800 as he was on the tax list for Grayson county, Va. (as listed above).

 

note: Other children of John Arms & _______Goode appear to be: John b: ca. 1770-80 in Prince Edward county, married Polly. Same John as added above.

Charles b: ca. 1790 in Prince Edward county, married Martha Forrest 2 Oct. 1813 in same county.
